It’s the most wonderful time of the year – chipping potato harvest! With long hours, the stress that comes with every harvest and the race against the weather and wanting to meet our customers’ needs, while we’re in the thick of digging spuds it may not seem as cheery as that old Christmas song sounds. But, it is exciting to see how well the fruits – or in this case tubers – of our farm crew’s labor have developed. And the word from the fields is that they have developed splendidly.
We started digging in the Hagerty Field (located just a hair northwest of our Malin processing plant) September 8th. With warm, dry weather, the potato harvest crew dug while pipe crew pulled solid set from the field. After being dug, the chipping potatoes were sent to our packing shed and loaded for delivery. So, not only did we get our first chipping potatoes dug, we got our first load of potatoes through the shed too!
Every potato harvest is different, with new challenges to keep our crews on their toes. We hope the preparation and the strategies we’ve developed will keep downtime to a minimum this season and the weather stays in our favor. More than anything, we hope this harvest season is as safe as it is profitable.
Here’s to safety and beautiful spuds!
