Welcome To Our Hemp Farm
Since 1973 we’ve been farming in the Klamath Basin, raising grain, hay and chipping potatoes. Now we’re adding hemp to our farm.
After 25 years of being innovators in the chipping potato industry, our farm sees a chance to be part of what is being called “one of the greatest food supplement disruptions since sugar.” (Dr. Jay Noller, PhD, Oregon State University) With the passing of the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, we see growing hemp as an opportunity to promote sustainability for our business environmentally, socially and economically.
The burgeoning hemp market is allowing us to quickly implement a vertical integration structure which will allow us enter into this new frontier, and in the long run, give us an opening to get into this quickly growing segment of agri-business. The Klamath Basin in particular is one of Southern Oregon’s ideal locations for growing hemp. Klamath Falls has an average of 218 days of sunshine and the rich volcanic soil and ancient lake beds in the area help make it easier for us to make this leap.
Hemp Seed Breeding Program
When we started looking into the hemp market, we found a lack of trustworthy seed supplies with stable genetics and current price-point of high-quality seed wasn’t sustainable. Therefore, we produced our first hemp seed crop in greenhouses in May, 2019, and planted our first crop for the 2019 production year. We will also raise field cultivated hemp seed crops to support rapid growth in the future.
As there are many suggested best practices for hemp cultivation, we planted multiple 100 acre trial production plots for the 2019 season. This allowed us to experiment with multiple planting patterns, harvest methods and hemp varieties. All hemp biomass is organic and hemp seed production will be conventional.
One of our goals is to offer organic CBD oil as new regulations are implemented. Based on our research, we found ethanol is the most economical production method. With that consideration, we have purchased an extraction unit that will produce up to 250 liters of CBD oil per day according to our projections.
Looking To The Future of Hemp
As we evaluate the growing hemp market, we see a lot of opportunities waiting to unfold. Taking into consideration the market volatility and developing regulations, our plan includes reaching out to current partners to determine their interest level and how this product fits in their portfolio. We also plan to seek partnerships with companies holding similar values to our own to join us in this venture. Finally, we will explore the open hemp market including potential food grade hemp seed, fiber and cosmetics.
Hemp farming is an exciting frontier that we’re excited to explore as well as a great opportunity for our farms and the Klamath Basin. We are approaching this new venture conservatively while at the same working to be pioneers in what may be the most significant agricultural rush of this century. However, we’re still committed to our core principles of innovating, growing great crops and providing our customers with excellent customer service.
